Studio 21 Kolkata

The program was compiled by AG Kurzfilm and German Films, the selection was curated by Alfred Rotert (EMAF Osnabrück), Giovanna Thiery (Filmwinter Stuttgart), Anne  Turek (AG Kurzfilm), Insa Wiese (Internationale Kurzfilmwoche Regensburg) and Gerhard Wissner (Kasseler Dokumentarfilm und Videofest)

Organized by TENT, Theatre for Experiments in New Technologies, Kolkata in collaboration with Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan Kolkata, Studio 21, Kolkata, India Foundation for Arts, Bangalore, Berlinale Shorts, Kasseler Dok Fest, and The WOW Art Film & Video Festival.

At the time when multiple screens, medium, forms and aesthetics intersect the media scene; moreover, boundaries between arts and producer-audience, as well as sites of production and exhibition are becoming increasingly fluid, TENT (theatre for experiments in new technologies) Kolkata, attempts to bridge the gap between theory and practice. TENT intends to generate a forceful and perceptible network between various marginalized arts and artists across the globe, and is a space for independently produced and innovative works, which reinvent practice as praxis. In 2014 TENT launched LITTLE CINEMA INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL for experimental films and new media art. The 2017 programme is its 4th edition.

The term ‘Little Cinema’ does not imply “small” (budget) or “short” (length) films or films for young adults with “little” exposure, rather it draws from the unique ‘Little Magazine’ culture pertinent amongst educated youth located across geographies, who are deeply connected with political movements and radical thought. More important such writings – even if sporadic -- have been imagined in relation to theatre, cinema, music and fine arts; and remain a potent voice of alternative undertakings, and continue to thrive outside the mainstream media. ‘Little Magazine’ cultures have produced critical debates and contest established genres and traditions of publication. Moreover, the ‘author’ of such texts often reside in multiple zones – sometimes a teacher, sometimes an office clerk, or an engineer or a bank officer, even a theatre activist, or a singer, or filmmaker and so on.

By considering such practices the ‘TENT Little Cinema International Festival’ locates the new film and video culture within the contemporary digital context, which has expanded / split / compressed the screen, and has transformed media experiences by making it more intimate as well as spectacular.
In continuation with its previous years’ projects and programmes and attempts to ‘imagine, evolve, intervene’ ‘TENT Little Cinema International Festival’ 2017 presents a bouquet of exceptional short and feature length films (experimental, fiction, non-fiction) this December!
