Installation / Exhibition Memory Scape

By Surajit Biswas

The first part of the project will include the artist working on developing his art works and viewers are welcome to come and interact with the artist while he develops his art works with video and sound installations. In the second part of the project, viewers are welcome to directly participate in making jute sticks, which will be added to his created works at the institute. There will be an interesting moment at the end of the project where conversation and an exchange of dialogues will take place with existing laborers working in jute factories in the city.

In this present work, I am using dry jute sticks as an expression of the memory jute industry and the state of labour and other issues related to the decline of the legacy that was the main source of work in Bengal since the British Raj. My intention is also to highlight the material, and explore its relation to dots and lines and a path from a personal expression to global experience. The procedure of work will develop slowly as the interaction with the space increases that will occupy the the auditorium space of Goethe-Institut and expand into the external spaces to create a dialogue between the outside and the inside. The work will be a process of maintaining balance between the material, space and its diverse possibilities. I will also try to develop some conversation between the material, space and people with specific reference to jute labours & there present condition etc .
