CONTAGION: Performance, Space, Community was an 8-session conversation series that interrogated the live performance experience in a pandemic context where such experiences were lost to us. As the 27 speakers and respondents explored the human impulse to gather together and the uniqueness of the performance experience and performance spaces, larger socio-political questions of solidarity, ethics, stigma, responsibility and sustainability emerged. In this film, the three curators look back at the series through a conversational process analysing the questions we raised, the responses they catalysed, and - most importantly - the fresh areas they opened up to lead us forward. We dwell on what our roles as artists, arts audiences and arts presenters could be in a world where participatory processes and democratic spaces are under severe threat.
