A programme around the 2013 exhibition in Dessau which sought to contextually reconstruct the 1922 show in Kolkata both representing and exploring the moments of shared modernism.

A moderated-conversation between with Partha Mitter, Parul Dave-Mukherji and Regina Bittner.

Regina Bittner © Regina Bittner Regina Bittner is a cultural anthropologist and curator. She has studied cultural theory and art history at Leipzig University and received her doctorate from the Institute for European Ethnology at the Humboldt Universität Berlin. As head of the Academy of the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation she curates and teaches the postgraduate and cross disciplinary programmes on transcultural modernism in design and architecture research. She has been the Deputy Director of the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation since 2009.Her most recent curatorial project include Versuchsstätte Bauhaus. The collection, the permanent exhibition in the Bauhaus Museum Dessau. Her research interests combine cultural anthropological approaches in architecture and design studies with questions of decolonisation, critical heritage and its mediation in teaching and curatorial practice. Her most recent curatorial and publication projects include Design Rehearsal. Conversations about Bauhaus Lesson together with Katja Klaus (2019), Craft becomes modern. The Bauhaus in the making (in collaboration with Renee Padt 2017), In Reserve. The Household! Historic Models and Contemporary Positions from the Bauhaus (in collaboration with Elke Krasny) and  The Bauhaus in Calcutta. An Encounter of the Cosmopolitan Avant-garde (in collaboration with Kathrin Rhomberg, 2013).

Partha Mitter © Partha Mitter Partha Mitter, Hon. D. Lit. (Courtauld Institute, London University), is Emeritus Professor in Art History, University of Sussex, Member of Wolfson College, Oxford and Honorary Fellow, Victoria & Albert Museum, London. As writer and historian of art and culture, he specializes in the reception of Indian art in the West, as well as in modernity, art and identity in India, and more recently in global modernism. He has held fellowships at the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton; Getty Research Institute, Los Angeles; Clark Art Institute, Williamstown, Massachusetts; and CASVA, National Gallery of Art, Washington DC. He was also Radhakrishnan Memorial Lecturer at All Souls College, Oxford.His publications include: Much Maligned Monsters: History of European Reactions to Indian Art (Clarendon Press, Oxford 1977; Chicago University Press Paperback 1992; new ed. Oxford University Press, Delhi 2013); Art and Nationalism in Colonial India 1850-1922: Occidental Orientations (Cambridge University Press, Cambridge 1994); The Triumph of Modernism: India’s Artists and the Avant-Garde – 1922–1947 (Reaktion Books, London, Oxford University Press, New Delhi 2007) and numerous articles in various international journals  including 'Bauhaus in Kalkutta', in: Annemarie Jaeggi (ed.): bauhaus global. Gesammelte Beiträge der Konferenz Bauhaus Global (Bauhaus-Archiv, Berlin). He also contributed to the exhibition Das Bauhaus in Kalkutta in 2013 and has been advisor to the Stiftung Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westphalen in Düsseldorf on global modernism. 

Parul Dave-Mukherji © Parul Dave-Mukherji Parul Dave-Mukherji is professor of Visual Studies and Art History at the School of Arts and Aesthetics, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, India. She holds a PhD from Oxford University and has a parallel research interest in pre-modern Indian aesthetics and modern/contemporary Indian/Asian Art. She has held fellowships at the Clark Art Institute, Williamstown, USA; South Asia Institute, Heidelberg, Germany; British Academy fellowship, Goldsmiths’ College, London; Kunst Historische Institute, Florence. Her recent publications include “Whither Art History in a Globalizing World”, The Art Bulletin, June, vol. XCVI, Number 2, and many more. Currently, she is co-editing with Partha Mitter and Rakhee Balaram a comprehensive history of modern and contemporary Indian art in a volume titled 20th Century Indian Art.
