Poets Translating Poets - An Encounter: Dr Aruna Dhere and Dr Ulrike Draesner

Profiles:
Ulrike Draesner was born in 1962 in Munich and has been living in Berlin since 1996. She is a poet, a writer of long and short fiction and cultural essays. Apart from numerous appearances in anthologies and magazines, she has published five major poetry collections, five novels, two of which were nominated for the German Book Prize, three collections of stories and two collections of essays. Draesner’s multimedia collaborations include videos, operas and space poems. She has been awarded poetic readerships at German and International Universities and received numerous literary prizes, most recently the Nicolas-Born Prize for Literature 2016. Her novel Seven Springs develops a chorus of voices telling about the consequences of forced migration in Middle and Eastern Europe from 1939 up to today. Draesner lives at Oxford as poet in residence until autumn 2017.
Aruna Dhere, born in 1957 is a Marathi litterateur who has written over fifty five books in different genres, her major contributions are in area of poetry, Prose, Socio-cultural history, Folk literature, Stories, biographies with an enduring emphasis on the lives and worlds of women. She has also written criticism on Marathi literature, folk literature and the epics. Her books of poetry include Prarambha, Jaave Janmaakade, Nilya Paradarshak Andharaat and Matraakshar. She has received numerous awards, among them are the Labhsetwar Award, the Acharya Atre Award and the Kavi Kusumagraj Award. She has worked as an editor, lecturer and producer. She worked as a director (Sanchalika) at ‘Shashwati’ Woman Research Centre, Bharati Vidyapeeth from 2010 to 2015.
She has translated selected stories written by Indian Woman Authors, her selected poems were published by Hindi Sahitya Akadami, Delhi. Her novella ‘Kriushnakinara’ was translated in to Hindi and Gujrathi language. Aruna Dhere has won more than 50 awards from people, state and reputed literary institutes.
She is Secretary of regional literature festivals and member of the Sahitya Akademi.
