In this exclusive Masterclass presented by Goethe-Institut/ Max Mueller Bhavan Mumbai, renowned baritone Benjamin Appl will offer training to six handpicked singers interested in classical music, especially in German art song. Benjamin will work with each participant on enunciation, stage presence, and vocal technique. This masterclass will take place in collaboration with the National Centre for the Performing Arts, Mumbai.
 

Eligibility:

Students of western classical music, professional/trained singers in India.
(Please note, the participants will be asked to prepare and present 1 or 2 art songs with piano accompaniment).

Selection Criteria:
- A 50-word biography
- Audio recording of one song (preferably a German Lied)

Travel Grant:

The Goethe-Institut/ Max Mueller Bhavan Mumbai will award two fixed travel grants to successful candidates coming from outside of Mumbai.
 

About Benjamin Appl:

Described as ‘the current front-runner in the new generation of Lieder singers’ (Gramophone Magazine, UK), Benjamin Appl is celebrated by audiences and critics in recital, concerts and opera. The German baritone was a BBC New Generation Artist and an ECHO Rising Star artist for the 2015/16 season, appearing in recital at major European venues including the Barbican Centre London, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Wiener Konzerthaus, Philharmonie Paris and Cologne and the Laeiszhalle Hamburg. The Wigmore Hall London have named him a Wigmore Hall Emerging Artist (2015/16). He became an exclusive SONY Classical recording artist in May 2016 and won the Gramophone Young Artist of the Year Award in 2016.His first solo album for Sony Classical ’Heimat’, was released in March 2017 and contains German and English songs.
 
Appl is trained as a chorister at the renowned Regensburger Domspatzen and continued his studies at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater München and graduated from the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London, where he now teaches German Lieder. He had the good fortune to be mentored by one of the greatest singers of the twentieth century, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau.
 
He will also perform at the NCPA on the 16th & 17th of February.
