Road Number Zero is located between Delhi and Gurgaon, and is home to a diverse range of spaces, people, objects and processes. Devashish’ interactions with the road began in 2016 when he started working at an art museum that had its warehouse on
Road Number Zero.
Noticing the name of the road, he began to think about how anything on this road could be viewed as having lost all references. Over the months that he spent working on this road he collected objects, photographs and also recorded conversations.
By installing the road signs at the Institut, he has extended
Road Number Zero to include Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan. Along with the signposts, there are photographs of the road, and audio recordings of conversations that he had with his colleagues while working there.
The project begins with these three elements, and will culminate in a series of curated interactive sessions with individuals, using
Road Number Zero as a starting point to explore ideas behind the objects and processes found on the road. From these conversations a hundred letters will emerge that Devashish will write to different people on themes stemming from his experiences on the road.
Using
Road Number Zero as a metaphor for the larger phenomenon of how humans create and inhabit space and time, Devashish hopes to initiate dialogues surrounding the social and aesthetic forces that produce and guide the progress of rural and urban landscapes.
