Modernism & Abstraction: India, Germany and Switzerland

What if Paul Klee was from India, and Prabhakar Barwe hailed from Switzerland? How would our understanding of art history shift if we freed it from the boundaries of national origin? In this video, we explore a radical rethinking of art history — one that resists linear timelines, national labels, and conventional ideas of influence. Instead, we imagine a web of interconnected practices, where styles, philosophies, and ideas circulate without a fixed point of origin.

About the project

The project aims to bring two artists and their artistic as well as theoretical/pedagogical ideas into an exciting dialogue: Prabhakar Barwe (1936-1995), a painter of the second wave of Indian modernism based in Maharashtra, and Paul Klee (1879-1940), a Swiss-German modernist painter and teacher at the Bauhaus School in the 1920s in Germany.
