This year, the Prayatna film and dance festival makes its appearance for the 6th time in Pune. Organized by Hrishikesh’s Centre for Contemporary Dance and the Goethe-Institut/Max Mueller Bhavan, the festival not only presents a multitude of dance forms but aims at creating awareness about Indian contemporary dance.

About Hrishikesh Pawar and Hrishikesh’s Centre of Contemporary Dance
Hrishikesh Pawar was born in Pune in 1983 in Pune, and realized very early in life that he did not want to follow a ‘normal’ career path. He experimented with various art forms and found his calling in music and dance. He trained in Kathak – a classical Indian dance style – under Manisha Abhay and later, also studied under renowned dancers such as Guru Rohini Bhate, Guru Sharadhini Gole and Amala Shekhar.

In 2004 he took part in the “Summer Imvov Workshop” in Berlin and performed as a soloist for the Museum of Contemporary Art in Berlin as well as for the Seebühne Hiddensee. In the following year he was invited as a guest student to attend the dance teachers training programme at the Palucca School of Dance in Dresden – the first Indian to have received such an invitation. The training enabled him to blend the varying influences of Kathak and contemporary dance to create his own language of dance.

In 2007, Hrishikesh Pawar founded the Centre of Contemporary Dance in Pune. He is focused on creating awareness for contemporary dance in India and to make it more accessible. In 2009, he founded the Hrishikesh Dance Company (HDC), which follows the same goals, working in cooperation with cultural organizations such as the Goethe-Institut/Max Mueller Bhavan.
