When we leave (Die Fremde)
Direction: Feo Aladag, Farbe, 119 Min., 2010
Drama, Migrantendrama
Content: This story might seem like a familiar one, often reported in the newspapers. However, director, producer and scriptwriter Feo Aladag has managed to create a multi-layered and poignant portrait of a family, far removed from the typical clichés, with her breathtaking cinematic debut “When We Leave” (Die Fremde).
Topic: Escape, family traditions, family constraints, violence against women, reputation, conflicts between orthodox devotion and traditions on one hand and sympathy and loyalty on the other. The feeling not to belong anywhere.
Her story plays in the world of the so-called "integrated" young Turks. In a way, she describes the turkish life as a parallel society without generalisations.
Intention of the film:
The film provides an inner perspective of a world which is cut off from the outside world. It intends to elicit empathy beyond the medial and religious prejudices. It shows, still how far away is the path towards freedom and reconciliation betwen the cultures.
