A Luxury River Ship from Kolkata by Annapurna Garimella
Shipbuilding in Kolkata is fragile industry today and building a luxury river cruise ship for clients from Australia, Europe and America involves understanding and implementing designs produced for an equally vulnerable global tourism industry. This talk looks at ship design in the context of the Gangetic river geography, global business flows, sedimented industrial skills, digital rendering and actual production and the experiences people seek in ancient landscape.
Dr. Annapurna Garimella is an India-based art historian and designer. Her research focuses on late medieval Indic architecture and the history and practices of vernacular art forms in India after Independence.
