Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan Kolkata and Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Institute of Asian Studies cordially invite you to a literary evening with German novelist Christopher Kloeble, on Monday, 18 September 2017, at 6 pm, at Maulana Azad Museum, Kolkata.
Christopher Kloeble is visiting India, in particular Kolkata to do research for his new novel on the Schlagintweit Brothers (Hermann, Adolf and Robert - orientalists, geographers and explorers), who, on suggestion of the great scholar Alexander von Humboldt, was assigned by “East Indian Company” to conduct a survey in India and high Asia. It was to serve as the accurate cartography of the country. Starting from Bombay they travelled through whole of India, from Leh to Madras; reached Calcutta and and from there to Darjeeling; and later travelled further to Assam, Bhutan, Nepal, Tibet and Turkistan during their explorations in 1854-57.
Christopher Kloeble’s presentation will focus on Schlagintweit Brothers explorations in India and Asia; and his new novel in relation to this historical episode.

He was writer-in-residence at Cambridge University (UK), at the Goethe Institute in Bangalore (India), and Max Kade Visiting Professor at Dartmouth College (USA).
