The Young Karl Marx  (Der junge Karl Marx)
Dir.: Raoul Peck | 2017 | 118 min.

Karl Marx and his ideas have been depicted in various film genres ranging from documentary, fictional drama to comedy. His most recent on-screen appearance was in The Young Karl Marx, directed by Haitian filmmaker Raoul Peck which portrays the manner in which Karl Marx wrestled with questions that still plague our world today.

The multilateral drama focuses on Marx’s formative years from 1843 to 1848, traces the development of the friendship and intellectual partnership between Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels and tells a personal story about the beginnings of Marxist theory and the formation of The Communist Manifesto. It is an interesting indication of how vital Marx and his ideas have remained for the cinema, many years after his death.
