Mini German film series
The second screening in a series of four films, revolving around architecture and design is:
The modern City
Director: div., colour, s/w, 177 min., 1956-1965
Following the “Neues Bauen” (“New Building”) ideals of the 1920s, the modernisation of European cities after 1945 was dedicated to improving living conditions for the working population. There was a lack of housing everywhere. Industrial mass production and consumer culture led to major changes for people and their social relationships. The medium of film was used to promote urban and transport models “of tomorrow” while also critiquing the growing rationalisation of everyday life. This selection of documentary and experimental short films offers a unique historical perspective on the controversy surrounding the modern city.
