The City of Tomorrow - Experimental Ground Asia

Asia looks at the concepts of a new city, which is a necessary, irrefutable and existentially urgent consequence of the millionfold migration to Asian cities. The series tries to find answers to the question “How do we want to live in the 21st century?” The expedition through Asian cities takes viewers along to Japan and China in search of answers to existential questions about civilisation in the 21st century.
The first episode focuses on Japan. Tokyo is the number one global city. A metropolis with the highest number of inhabitants, the highest real estate prices and one of the most densely developed cities in the world. This city is like a macrocosm. A world in its own right with a system made up of rules and movements: quick, incredibly efficient, admirably disciplined.
That’s why the architecture of the smallest space was invented here: What is the minimum amount of space that one person needs? There is an entire school of architecture that deals with small and ultra-small living units. In Europe, it’s hard for people to imagine living in an apartment smaller than 20 square metres for years on end. The so-called “small-scale apartments” are not only a form of art – they are also a cultural phenomenon. The architects Osamu Nishida, Hitoshi Wakamatsu, Sou Fujimoto, Mitsuhiko Sato and Satoko Shinohara are the stars of this new type of architecture, which is both functional and aesthetic.
