It is easier to define an artist residency by saying what it is not: not a museum or a library because conservation is not its primary task, neither a theater nor a school. In his lecture, Jean-Baptiste Joly will explain the origin of artist’s residencies and describe their role in the current art ecosystems in different parts of the world. He will also give an insight into his experience with artists since he was appointed as director of Akademie Schloss Solitude in 1989. The third part of the lecture will be dedicated to the current global landscape of artist’s residencies.
