INTACH Lecture by Dr. George Michell
We are happy to present an
INTACH Lecture by well-known architect
Dr. George Michell.
He will give us an interesting insight into the Islamic architectural style
in the northern regions of Karnataka.
During the 14th-16th centuries the Bahmani and Baridi sultans of Karnataka sponsored a magnificent series of forts and palaces, mosques and tombs in and around Gulbarga and Bidar. These monuments are among the most inventive examples of Islamic building in India in terms of construction, design and decoration. Though comparatively unappreciated and little visited, they are included in
Islamic Architecture of Deccan India, the recent publication co-authored by Michell and Philon, with magnificent photographs by Antonio Martinelli, to be shown in the lecture.
Dr. George Michell is trained as an architect and is best known in Karnataka for his comprehensive survey, together with John M. Fritz, of the ruins of Hampi Vijayanagara. He has published extensively, most recently on Chettinad houses and Mughal architecture.
