Exhibition and Public Tour through Fort The Shifting City: Type Walk with Tanya George
Join us on a special type walk with Tanya George (TanyaTypes) through the Fort area, Mumbai's oldest neighbourhood and home to its earliest migrant communities. On the walk, Tanya will help us look closer and read the typographic landscape around us, to reconsider the role that signage plays in offering access - or not - to shifting city spaces.
The type walk will be followed by a guided tour of 'The Shifting City', Goethe-Institut/Max Mueller Bhavan Mumbai's newest exhibition. The exhibition explores imagined and lived experiences of the city of Mumbai as a place of ‘arrival’, through new works especially developed for the show by visual artist and designer Sameer Kulavoor, writer and journalist Rachel Lopez and photographer and journalist Ritesh Uttamchandani. It also incorporates existing works from artist Sudhir Patwardhan, and photographers Pallon Daruwala and Peter Bialobrzeski.
'The Shifting City' is curated by Kaiwan Mehta in collaboration with the Architecture Foundation, is part of the project called Making Heimat. Germany, Arrival Country, which was the main theme of the German Pavilion presented at the 15th International Architecture Exhibition 2016 - La Biennale di Venezia. This exhibition, produced for the city by the Goethe-Institut/Max Mueller Bhavan Mumbai also showcases extracts from research projects and books 'Extreme Urbanism IV: Looking at Hyper Density - Dongri, Mumbai (Harvard University) and 'State of Housing: Aspirations, Imaginaries, and Realities in India' (UDRI & AF).
