Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan New Delhi

By CASP & Kush Badhwar

From Up There They Were Just Numbers, by CASP & Kush Badhwar, is composed of audio recorded in and around the construction site of Navi Mumbai International Airport. The soundscape is made up of poetry, interviews, protest, meetings, field recordings of various environments, house demolition and the daily blasting that takes place to level Ulwe Hill to make way for the airport.

The soundscape can be heard in the stairwell of Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan Kolkata and the outdoor area of Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan New Delhi, and is accompanied by notice boards that will grow with visual and textual material as the exhibition and the situation at the site unfolds.

CASP’s work can be found on Facebook.
Visit Kush’s website.

The audio for From Up There They Were Just Numbers runs on a loop from 07:00-19:30, and consists of sounds of varied durations that are interspersed with silences. As the sounds play at different times of the day and are attuned to the daily rhythms of the Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan, it is possible that you might visit us during one of the quiet moments. While you wait for the next sound to play, why not use the opportunity to take a walk around the Institut and see the other works installed in and around the campus.
