About »In C«:
In 2021, the dance company Sasha Waltz & Guests will begin a new kind of artistic process from which both digital and live formats will continuously emerge. The musical basis is Terry Riley's "In C" (1964), an open composition that was revolutionary in its time and is generally regarded as the first work of minimal music. Based on this milestone in music history, Sasha Waltz and her dancers develop choreographic material that follows a similarly variable structure and is deliberately not designed as a finished stage piece.
"In C" is an experimental, constantly evolving process that rethinks Sasha Waltz & Guests' long-standing approach to their work and the dialogue between dance, music and space, both digital and analogue. At the same time, possibilities of flexible artistic production in times of pandemic and artistic exchange across national borders are explored. For example, the individual movement figures are recorded in video tutorials, which in the future should also enable dancers who are not on site to learn the choreographic material digitally.
"In C" is a dynamic, modular system that remains adaptable in times of pandemic. It is an exciting challenge to be able to develop many different variations and formats from it in the future, both for professional dancers and, in the long term, for children and amateurs. - Sasha Waltz
