Intergenerational Trauma
The case of the Partition of India

After the Partition of India in 1947, devised under British rule, a wave of violence engulfed parts of the country, especially the North. 14 Million people of different faiths were forced into exile, one million were murdered. How does this traumatic experience of one generation affect the lives of the following ones? Does something like “collective traumatisation” exist? How does the logic of trauma work? In a total of five recorded lectures and a discussion, renowned researchers and activists Urvashi Butalia, Sanjeev Jain, Sudhir Kakar, Amrita Narayanan and Haimanti Roy try to find answers to these questions.

The introductory event will feature lectures by feminist publisher, activist, and author Urvashi Butalia, historian Haimanti Roy, and psychoanalyst and author Sudhir Kakar. These three voices offer profound insight into the complex aftermath of the trauma of Partition. The contribution is complemented by further presentations and a discussion of all experts, which will be available in our media library afterwards.

This event will take place as part of the introductory programme of the Kultursymposium Weimar 2021 from 19 May 2021. Catch all the action on the KSWE website or via YouTube.
