German Films at the Pune International Film Festival 2022

Pune International Film Festival (PIFF) is one of the most popular and prestigious film forums in Pune. It makes a wide range of international films available to the cinema fans in Pune. Pune is also home to the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) and the National Film Archive of India (NFAI), as well as other renowned private film schools such as MIT and Symbiosis. Interest in international film has increased significantly in India in recent years.
However, contemporary international or German films still face difficulties in being presented in Indian cinemas through the normal distribution systems. Film festivals therefore continue to be one of the few opportunities to reach a wider audience with German film productions.
As every year, GI-Pune contributes by presenting two new German films. The following German films will be screened at the festival:
Fabian

Synopsis:
Berlin, 1931. Jakob Fabian works in the advertising department of a cigarette factory during the day and drifts through bars, brothels and artist studios with his wealthy friend Labude at night. When Fabian gets to know the self-confident Cornelia, he manages to shed his pessimistic attitude for a brief moment. He falls in love. But then he too falls victim to the great wave of layoffs, while Cornelia makes a career as an actress thanks to her boss and admirer. An arrangement that Fabian finds difficult to come to terms with. But it's not just his world that is falling apart...

Synopsis:
Young Franz Walter (LARS EIDINGER) has just graduated from Humboldt University when he receives an attractive offer from the GDR's foreign intelligence service. Dazzled by the many benefits the new job brings, Franz accepts the offer. Together with his girlfriend Corina (LUISE HEYER), he initially enjoys his new life. In his superior Dirk (DEVID STRIESOW) Franz finds a mentor who is well-disposed towards him and who supports him in word and deed during their joint foreign missions in the FRG. At first, Franz's missions seem to merely serve the GDR's information needs, but these soon grow larger and more monstrous. When Franz suddenly has to resort to means he can no longer reconcile with his conscience in his work assignments, he decides to quit - but the secret service won't let him go. Soon Franz is ready to cross all boundaries - and risk everything. Franz's fight for survival against a merciless system begins.
