In My Time of Dying (Im Tod) a theatre project by Sankar Venkateswaran (India) and Leon Pfannenmüller (Germany) premiers on March 31, 2022 at Theaterhaus Jena.

In My Time of Dying is a theatre piece set during a pandemic, a project that works dynamically both in physical space and as an ongoing conversation in a virtual space. The performance seeks dialogue based on the lowest common denominator of our human condition: the fact that we are all going to die and only have a limited amount of time to live. How do we die? How do we prepare for it? How do we deal with dying bodies? And after death? All are equal in death – is that actually true?

Im Tod_Sankar © Sankar Venkateswaran The two theater makers recapitulate their own subjective associations with death, share their own experiences and reenact scenes from their theater past, blurring the boundaries between autobiographical fact and fiction. The development of the piece has been informed by interviews with physicians, nurses and psychologists, ranging from Western scientific concepts to philosophical ideas about matter, life and death. The piece explores questions around palliative care, the needs of the dying, as well as rituals of death and mourning.

Languages: German, English and Malayalam, with German and English surtitles throughout.
