Rest Now, Sleep Later - an
Open Studio Presentation by our
bangaloREsident-Expanded@ZiMMT, Tasneem Lohani. The project explores sonic connectedness and healing as a way to navigate the atomising work culture of the post-pandemic techno-capitalist age. Inspired by the ancient Indian wisdom of mantras and chanting she intends to create a spatial sound work as a performative and experiential piece that would explore issues of labour, productivity and burnout alongside illness, fatigue and abuse on the body, caused by our obsession with productivity.
''Rest Now, Sleep Later is a project about resting. I have been thinking a lot about what it means to take a break because this year in particular has been so busy and exhausting for me. Maybe it was the post-Covid boost of energy. But many friends and family share with me this general exhaustion from working all the time. I discovered that this need to work and perform our best came from our parents and most likely from the post-colonial baggage of now wanting a better life for us than they had. And so, I and so many friends I know say yes to every project coming our way. My friends working in IT say yes to every 2 AM meeting with their American clients thanks to technology. Capitalists in positions of power have built our societal structure around the economy and monetary profit. Which tends to capitalize on the 'cheap' labour of marginalised people to make them work more for less. It has been strange to think about how Capitalism controls us in this way. This work is a meditation on these thoughts.''
