Martin Kämpchen's "Mein Leben in Indien: Zwischen den Kulturen zu Hause" - Reading and Conversation

Martin Kämpchen, a German scholar of German and religion, has lived in India since 1973 and is deeply immersed in the religious, cultural and social life of the country. On the occasion of his 75th birthday, his autobiography was published in 2022. In conversation with Jyoti Sabharwal, professor of German studies, Martin Kämpchen will talk about his extraordinary life and read from his autobiography.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Martin Kämpchen studied German literature and French in Vienna and Paris, then comparative religion in Chennai and Santiniketan. He has lived in India since 1973, and in Santiniketan since 1980. He translated Ramakrishna and Rabindranath Tagore from Bengali into German, researched Tagore's relations with Germany, and wrote books on cultural exchange between India and Germany. Most recently he published Am Abend notiert - diary (2015), Pfefferkörnchen - stories (2015), Rabindranath Tagore: Am Ufer der Stille - Lyrikübersetzungen (2016). His autobiography Mein Leben in Indien: Zwischen den Kulturen zu Hause was published in 2022.

ABOUT THE Moderator:

Jyoti Sabharwal is Professor of German Language at the Department of Germanic and Romance Studies, Delhi University. She has published widely on German-language exile literature in India and on comparative urban studies. Her publications also include translations of fictional and non-fictional works from German into English and Hindi, and in 2013 she published Willy Haas: Encountering India as a Place of Exile.
