Chain Unchained is a regional initiative that brings together practitioners and experts from India and Germany from the arts, creative and technological industries. The project intends to take a closer look at the issues surrounding web3 and NFTs in order to better understand the opportunities, possibilities and risks involved.
Within the framework of the larger project, Goethe-Institut Kolkata presents a day’s workshop conducted by Varun Desai and Blessin Varkey
Artists and cultural practitioners have always adopted new technologies to further their own practices and add new dimensions to the general socio-political cultural discourse. One of the newest technologies which have made their mark on the cultural sector are Blockchain and NFTs. Like their predecessors, these technologies need to assess differences in the cultural field in terms of their significance and adaptability. Promising future or temporary hype, this question seems undecided at the moment.
However, what is clear is that NFTs have found their space in culture and it is important to understand the nuances of the technology to in order to maximise its potential.
The one-day workshop delves deeply into the creative practices of working with NFTs. In addition to presentations by artists and creatives who work with NFTs, participants will learn the fundamentals of blockchain, NFTs, and wallets, as well as how to mint their own NFTs.

FACILITATORS
Blessin Varkey is a technologist who works in the emerging technologies space – AI & Blockchain. Since 2015, Blessin has been exploring applied improvisational theatre in mental health and leadership and also teaches improvisation through The Impro Company. He is a NASSCOM-recognized Social Innovator and has been working in the technology space since 2013.
Varun Desai, the head of Tezos India Art and Culture, is a visionary leader who organizes community events, develops innovative blockchain apps for art, explores cutting-edge technologies, and expands the boundaries of NFTs and Digital Art, including participation in events like the India Art Fair 2023.
