‘Returning Sound’ is a specially curated series of music programmes focusing on experimental music written by independent electronic music producers.

The series is curated by Varun Desai.

Returning Sound #11 will feature in the second edition of ‘The Listening Biennial 2023’.

The programme will include performances by Subhas Mazumdar, Deeper Sines and Bengal Chemicals

Subhas Mazumdar © Subhas Mazumdar Subhas Mazumdar is an electronic music producer based out of Chandernagore, India. He is known for his atmospheric / ethereal soundscapes, Subhas has carved a niche for himself with his blend of synth-heavy melodies and lush textures in the world of ambient music. In addition to his solo work, Subhas is also the mind behind Indie / Dreampop trio Nilein and the Bengali electronic duo Umi where he pushes the boundaries of electronic music, fusing traditional Bengali influences with contemporary production techniques.

Deeper Sines © Deeper Sines Through ‘Deeper Sines’, Composer Shubhodip Roy wishes to bridge the gap between electronic and orchestral sounds. He aims to blend in these two distinct yet paradoxical sonic elements to create an emotive soundscape. The amalgamation of the playfulness of electronics and sampled elements and the invigorating warmth of orchestral arrangements make up the essence of Deeper Sines.

Bengal Chemicals © Bengal Chemicals Incubated for ten years within both a laptop and a practice premised on an assumed illegibility, inspired by the combative intent of DEK bass and unpacking colonial assessments of the "weakness" of the Bengali corpus, the work of Bengal Chemicals poses as many questions as it does answers. Is this a snapshot of contemporary West Bengal as informed by luminaries such as Tetragrammacide, JESSOP&CO., and DJ Khobir, or is this a departure into something more deranged? Does his choice to release an album a week over the past month mirror the apparent decoupling of logic that confoundedly seems to hold his music together? Could this have come from anywhere else but Kolkata in 2023?
