- Part of series: German Cinema in Focus, New German Cinema - Rainer Werner Fassbinder
The next film to be screened as part of our ongoing film series German Cinema in Focus, curated by Shivani, is Lola, directed by Rainer Werner Fassbinder. This is the last film that we are showing from the movement of New German Cinema.
In the autumn of 1957, within the backdrop of Germany’s “economic miracle”, Lola, an alluring cabaret singer and prostitute, revels in her ability to captivate and seduce men. Yet, deep down, she yearns for something more - a desire for wealth, possessions, and true love. To achieve her aspirations, Lola devises a daring scheme, setting a corrupt construction contractor against the newly appointed principled building commissioner. Her audacious plan aims to raise her status in a world where every aspect, and every individual, is seemingly available for purchase.
Lola
by Rainer Werner Fassbinder
1981 | 115 min.| col. | German with English subtitles
The film was inspired by a predicament first sketched by Heinrich Mann in his novel, Professor Unrat, also used by Josef von Sternberg as the basis for his film, The Blue Angel.
''Fassbinder has rarely directed with such nonchalance. His usual perfectionism is still evident, but the sheer enjoyment he got from filmmaking is more palpable here than in any of his other works.''
