Who is Trickster Orchestra?
Trickster Orchestra performs in varying lineups and sizes. Among its collective are superb musicians and vocalists from genres such as electronic and new music, global classical music traditions, jazz, weird pop, and free improvisation. The ensemble does not simply paste these together, but strives to discover a shared, contemporary musical language.
Based on the conviction that present-day culture is post-exotic, Trickster Orchestra envisions new music that transcends genres and cultures. Traditions and skills rather become tools for improvisation that triggers musical innovation. The orchestra thereby opens up completely new sonic experiences for both musicians and audiences at its concerts and collaborations with contemporary dance and poetry.

Ensemble Biography
Trickster Orchestra © Silke Weinsheimer Trickster Orchestra was founded in 2013 by Cymin Samawatie and Ketan Bhatti. The orchestra was born out of a collaboration between Cymin Samawatie and members of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, which prompted her to create an ensemble for musical experiments uniting members of Berlin’s free and independent music scene and institutionalised ensembles.

In 2016, Trickster Orchestra received international attention after its performance at the Jazzfest Berlin, described by festival director Richard Williams as one of the most exciting orchestras from the German capital. After concerts in Europe and Western Asia, the orchestra initiated its own projects, including Modara – Festival for Contemporary Music and Divan Berlin-İstanbul – TransPositions between Poetry and Music.

The Concert Project in Germany: Disturbing DIY
In its new international concert project »Disturbing DIY« with guests from Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Bangalore, Trickster Orchestra deals with the theme of change. How does the new come into the world? Through destruction, mutation, imitation, adaptation or revolution? Research on these questions and extensive workshops flow into new compositions and improvisations to be presented through two concerts in Bonn and Berlin, Germany.

Concert Dates:
October 23, 2020 in Bonn
October 25, 2020 in Berlin
Presented by Outernational, curated by Elisa Erkelenz, with kind support from the Goethe-Institut (The other Beethoven(s)).
