KAIROI Time Auction is an auction of time collected by a time-sensitive vending machine - KAIROI, a project by sonam. Two vending machines were installed at Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan (New Delhi and Kolkata) for 6 months in 2019-2020. Instead of money, the machine read time as an input; one had to stand in front of it with a finger placed on the simulated-biometric scanner, and ‘spend’ time to get a product (snacks).

A vending machine is the closest embodiment of capitalism’s spatial and temporal shrinkage, but here the role of money is displaced by time in the exchange economy. It forces the user to slow down and experience the passing of time to get something, instead of rushing to their speeding lives of infinite accumulation.

The time that you see on the website i.e.33550 minutes [23 days: 7 hours: 10 minutes] has been accumulated by the machines from users/ participants at the venues, and is put for auction through non-monetary bids as acts/ tasks/ happenings.

Visit www.kairoi.in to bid and acquire Time. (Note: This auction does not involve any kind of exchange of money, goods and/or services.)
