Nino Bulling is an artist and author with a focus on comics, textiles, and publishing strategies. He studied ceramic sculpture and visual communication at the Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design in Halle.

Bulling has published several reality-based comic books shaped by a strong interest in visual politics, including “Bruchlinien. Drei Episoden zum NSU” (co-authored with Anne König, Spector Books, 2018) and “Lichtpause” (Rotopol, 2017). His graphic novel “abfackeln / firebugs” (Edition Moderne / Colorama, 2022) was originally published as part of his contribution to documenta 15 in Kassel, alongside an exhibition and an extensive public program centered on trans and queer strategies in graphic publishing.
Bulling lives and works in Berlin. He has held teaching positions at institutions including St. Lucas Antwerp and the Bern Academy of the Arts, and in 2024 he was a guest professor for comics and illustration in Kassel. His exhibitions often combine large-scale installations with publishing projects; most recently, his work was shown at the Tomi Ungerer Museum in Strasbourg.

During his residency in Kyoto, Nino Bulling will explore gender-nonconforming characters in manga from the 1960s and 70s, with a particular focus on Osamu Tezuka’s “Princess Knight” (Ribon no Kishi).
