Maxine Weiss works across sculpture, installation, video, and research-based practices, examining how ecological, political, and economic conditions are inscribed in materials. She combines industrial materials with found objects and plant-based matter.
She completed her studies as a Meisterschülerin at the Academy of Fine Arts Munich and at the Beaux-Arts de Marseille. Prior to this, she studied Art History and Cultural Anthropology in Munich, Freiburg, Paris, and Vienna. Her work has recently been presented at Lothringer 13 (2025), DG Kunstraum (2025), and the ERES Foundation (2024) in Munich. She has also exhibited at THAV in Taipei (2025), the Fondation Maison des Sciences de l’Homme in Paris (2024), and M.A.C.A in Alcamo, Sicily (2024).
During her residency at Villa Kamogawa, Maxine Weiss will further deepen her artistic engagement with seaweed. Drawing on archival research in Kyoto as well as targeted fieldwork at sites of seaweed cultivation, she seeks to gain deeper insight into the interconnections between ecology, culture, and the production systems associated with these plants. Central to her research is an interest in transformation, coexistence, and the unstable relationship between constructed systems and organic growth.
