Patrik Thomas (*1986) is a filmmaker and media artist based in Munich and Lisbon. He studied Media Art at the Academy of Fine Arts Munich under Julian Rosefeldt, Olaf Nicolai, and Klaus vom Bruch. He later completed his Meisterschüler studies with Clemens von Wedemeyer at the Academy of Fine Arts Leipzig (HGB Leipzig) and conducted research as a fellow at the University of São Paulo on Brazilian cineclubismo (film club culture).
His films have been screened internationally. “BOALÂNDIA” (2024, with Mathias Reitz Zausinger) premiered at the Mostra São Paulo and was subsequently shown at Lichter Filmfest Frankfurt and DOK.fest Munich. For “TAIWASTE”, he received the FFF Promotional Award of the Regensburg Short Film Week, as well as the Leonhard & Ida Wolf Art Prize Munich, the Franco-German Art Prize, and the Bremen Video Art Award. With “CINÉ VÉLO CITÉ”, he realized more than 70 screenings across public spaces in Munich. He also teaches at institutions including Munich University of Applied Sciences and has served as a jury member in Regensburg and Bremen.
During his stay in Kyoto, Thomas plans to undertake a research project exploring the city’s public space through the lens of time-based media. Drawing on his experience with “CINÉ VÉLO CITÉ” and the CINEVAN Project, two mobile cinema and laboratory formats for urban environments, he will investigate new approaches to engaging with public space through moving images and media-based practices.
