A Look Back – and Forward – to the 2017 Elections
In 2017, the Goethe-Institut Kenya in partnership with Twaweza Communications has been organizing a series of monthly dialogue forums on the general elections. For better or worse, the elections will have happened by the time we convene for our next session.
On September 21st, six weeks after the first Election Day and a month before the rerun, we will look back on the campaigns; the elections themselves, their outcome, and their repercussions. Our panel will reflect on mistakes made and lessons learnt, as well as on the general state of the nation.
Which turned out to be the decisive factors for the elections? What were the key issues that swayed voters? How correct were the pollsters? How did IEBC perform? How did the candidates handle themselves? Did they polarize the country through use of inciting language? What does the Supreme Courts decision to repeat the presidential election mean for the country? And where do we go from here?
