"The Museum of the World" by Christopher Kloeble

Dear Friends,

for this month of September, the Goethe-Institut Nairobi has a special surprise for you!

We are not only going to have a public reading of a book originally written in German, but will also bring you the author himself, all the way from Germany!

Come and spend time with us and our guest Christopher Kloeble.
The event will also be livestreamed via the Goethe-Institut Facebook page.

Christopher is, among other publications, the author of the novel „Das Museum der Welt“ that is just being released in English under the title „The Museum of the World.“

It tells the story of Bartholomäus, a smart and curious orphan of about 12 years, growing up in Bombay in the 19th century, whose desire it is to found the museum of the world. Instead, he is made to join three German explorers – can we really call them scientists? – as an assistant...

According to one reviewer, „anyone strolling through ›The Museum of the World‹ encounters cultural misunderstandings, colonialism and racism. All wrapped up in an exciting adventure novel.”
Another states, “the Museum of the World‹ is an entertaining adventure, prankster and spy novel that paints a colorful picture of India in the 19th century.”

Already curious about the book? And more so: its author?

We can’t wait to welcome you to our event with Christopher who will be engaged in a conversation about his book, its theme and the reverberations across the world.

Excerpts will be read in German by the author and in English by Africa Poetry Slam champion Slim Shaka.

The reading series seeks to introduce literature originally written in German to an African audience: We will read excerpts of the book in both German and its English translation. The reading is followed by an open discussion on the themes in the book – and beyond.

Refreshments will be served.
