Asian Composer Showcase 2018
Announcement of the participants for the Asian Composers Showcase 2018
The Asian Composers Showcase, a project organized by the Goethe-Institut together with International Tongyeong Music Festival (TIMF) for promoting new musical compositions, is taking place for the sixth time. This year composers from the region of East Asia could for the first time apply directly to an “Open Call for Scores”. A four-member commission met in Munich on 8 December 2018 to select four outstanding pieces from the thirty-five submissions. By the end of the meeting, however, it was clear to the composers Younghi Pagh-Paan (Chairman), Johannes Schöllhorn, Cord Meijering and the conductor Alexander Liebreich that, in view of the high quality of the compositions, some of which include traditional instruments, there would have to be five participants in the upcoming Showcase.
On 7 April 2018, the following five pieces will be premiered by Ensemble TIMF as part of the Asian Composers Showcase 2018 in Tongyeong.
“Linear Patterns” for flute, bass clarinet, violin, viola, cello, double bass and piano
“Six Voices” for solo shakuhachi, flute, clarinet, violin, viola and cello
by Yu Kuwabara (Japan)
“Tears in Your Bottle” for clarinet, piano, haegeum, violin, viola, cello and double bass
by Sarang Kim (Korea)
“Ring...Tree Rings II” for flute, oboe, clarinet, violin, viola, cello, double bass, piano and guzheng
