Heera Kim studied composition and electronic composition with Prof. York Hoeller and Prof. Hans Ulrich Humpert at Cologne University of Music and then with Prof. Dr. h.c. Wolfgang Rihm at Karlsruhe's University of Music.
She was a winner of the BMW composition prize of Musica Viva and also won the Günter Bialas composition competition, Berliner Opernpreis and Toru Takemitsu award. She has participated in various artist-in-residence-programmes, including the UNESCO-Aschberg Bursaries for Artists Programme and Sacem.
Her works have been widely performed by, among others, the Ensemble für Neue Musik Zürich, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, Ensemble Interface, Ensemble AsianArt Berlin, Ensemble DissonArt Thessaloniki, Ensemble Interface, Trio Catch, Les cris de Paris and the ensemble of Neuköllner Oper Berlin.
