The Goethe-Institut in Lebanon is pleased to announce an Open Call for applications for the 3rd edition of the Ta’ziz-Partnership Project “ArtEvolution”.

Emerging artists in and around the field of performing arts interested in producing and presenting a final project to an audience are invited to apply.

Intended to provide a support program and production grant for up to ten participants presenting five projects, ArtEvolution seeks to provide a platform for creatives to produce an impactful and socially-politically relevant performance. 

The program consists of two short-term production residencies (May & September), a production fund of up to 8.000 € per project, a five-month time frame, in which participants work on their project, get supported by a mentor through monthly meetings, and a program of five monthly workshops. The final productions of the participants will be presented in a public platform in Beirut and two other locations in Lebanon, followed by public discussions with the artist(s) and their mentor.  

The program is accompanied by a series of public Impulse sessions, externally curated to exchange social and political critical topics with the participants and the public.

Eligibility 

  • Artists and cultural practitioners in and around the field of performing arts based in Lebanon, who already have experience in writing concepts and producing performances in the field of socio-political topics.
  • Applicants should have completed at least one artistic work or have initial experience in their field. 
  • Applicants should apply with an already finalized project concept, but not yet produced and performed in front of an audience.
  • Applicants should be willing to present a finalized performance to the public at least two times in the fall of 2023.
  • Projects are open to all artistic directions in the performing arts and related fields.  
  • Individuals and collectives (up to 2 applicants) may apply.
  • Five projects will be supported, and up to ten applicants will be selected.


We very much encourage the ArtEvolution Alumni of 2021 and 2022 to apply to finalized their work-in-progress projects.


Applicants must also meet the following criteria
  • Motivation and willingness to pursue an artistic practice in a collaborative manner. 
  • Must be able to demonstrate a commitment to the project they wish to produce and to the program (May – November 2023) in general.
  • Willingness to report on and document the project during the period of the program.
  • Willingness to participate in the following activities of the program and adhere to this schedule:
    • Mid-May 2023: 1st short term residency
    • May-September 2023: Individual monthly mentoring and monthly group workshops
    • June-November 2023: Impulse Sessions (accompanying outreach program) with up to eleven events on the topics addressed by the artists.
    • End of September  2023: 2nd short-term residency and final performance in front of an audience
    • September - November 2023: up to three public events to present the participant's finalized work in Beirut and two other locations in Lebanon, followed by a discussion with the artist(s) and his/her/their mentor.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Motivation letter (4000 characters)  
  • CV of the applicant(s)
  • Detailed project description, a draft of a script, including the names and roles of each collaborator (e.g.: sound designer, actor(s), dancer(s), technical director, producer, etc.)
  • Breakdown of the budget and a detailed schedule (max. five pages) 
  • Portfolio and/or work references of at least one of the applicants (e.g., links to recordings, videos, and other online presentations of works): qualifications and previous activities/projects performed in the last 2 years as evidence of work
  • If your script is in Arabic, please add a Synopsis in English.

Applications are to be completed and submitted with all required documents by March 23rd, 2023, 11:59 pm (EET) via the online application portal.

SELECTION PROCESS 
 

Deadline for submission of the application form is 11:59 pm (EEST) on March 23rd, 2023. 
Applications that are incomplete, sent after the deadline, or not submitted on the Application Portal of the Goethe-Institut will not be assessed. Candidates might be asked for additional documentation and/or information after the reception of the application. 

Eligible applications will then be forwarded to an external jury of international performing arts professionals, who will evaluate and select the candidates to be shortlisted and invited to participate in an online interview in the beginning of April. After the interviews, the final list of the five projects will be decided upon and announced by mid-April 2023. 

The members of the jury will be announced after the deadline for submission of the application. 

All applicants, whether selected or not, will receive a response to their application four weeks after the application deadline**. If selected, a grant agreement (in English) will be signed between the recipient and the Goethe-Institut in Lebanon.  

**Please note that due to a high volume of applications and the confidentiality of the selection process, the Goethe-Institut in Lebanon does not provide individual feedback on the reasons why an application was not selected.  

The Goethe-Institut reserves the right to suspend the grant award and require reimbursement upon realizing fraud and infringement in any submitted documents.
