Beirut Institute for Critical Analysis and Research (BICAR) and
Rosa-Luxemburg-Foundation, invites you to a conversation about Marx between
Michael Heinrich (Philosopher, DE) and
Frank Ruda (Philosopher DE/GR).
What are we in the eyes of Marx? is the first conversation of a joint event series continuing in 2019.
Michael Heinrich received the doctoral degree from the Department of Political Science of the Free University of Berlin. He taught economics for many years at the University of Applied Sciences in Berlin and was managing editor of
PROKLA: Journal for Critical Social Science. He has written in depth on Marx’s critique of political economy in his book,
The Science of Value. His An Introduction to the Three Volumes of Karl Marx’s Capital is probably the most popular introduction to Marx’s economic works in Germany. His work focuses on Marx´s theory and the history of the formation of economic theories. In 2018, Heinrich's first volume of a three-part Marx biography was published (
Karl Marx und die Geburt der modernen Gesellschaft: Biographie und Werkentwicklung. Band 1: 1818–184), depicting Marx's life in relation to his work's development.
Frank Ruda received his doctoral degree from University of Potsdam and his post-doctoral degree from the Free University in Berlin. He was an interim professor for the philosophy of audiovisual media at the Bauhaus University in Weimar, a visiting professor at the institute of philosophy at the Slovenian Scientific Research Center in Ljubljana and an interim professor for social philosophy at Goethe University Frankfurt. Since spring 2018 he has been a Senior Lecturer in Philosophy at the University of Dundee. He is also member of the board of the
German Society for Aesthetics, member of the editorial board of
Insolubilia (book series), and co-editor in chief of the journal
Crisis and Critique. He is the author of
Hegel’s Rabble: An Investigation into Hegel’s Philosophy of Right and
For Badiou: Idealism without Idealism and
Abolishing Freedom: A Plea for a Contemporary Use of Fatalism. He is co-author of
Reading Marx with Agon Hamza and Slavoj Žižek in which they radically reinterpret Marxism explaining the failures of neoliberalism and laying the foundations for a new emancipatory politics.
The conversation will be chaired by
Ray Brassier, member of the philosophy faculty at the American University of Beirut, known for his work in philosophical realism and member of Bicar.
