Syrian artists need support, especially in exile. Therefore the Goethe-Institut Lebanon is cooperating the Syrian organisation Ettijahat – Independent Culture and providing cultural grants for artists.

The war which has been raging on for over six years has greatly limited the otherwise rich cultural output in Syria. A majority of Syrian artists live in exile, where there is little financial support for their creativity. Therefore, the Syrian organization Ettijahat, whose aim is the promotion of Syrian art, is providing 20 cultural production grants for Syrian artists in cooperation with the Goethe-Institut Lebanon. As part of the “Laboratory of Arts”, grants are awarded in the following five categories: film and animation, theatre and performance, fine art, music and literature.

Following the Syrian migration to Europe, the grant programme will be expanded from the Middle East to Europe, where most of the Syrian artists now live. They will exhibit the results at art platforms in several major European cities at the end of the grant period in order to break down prejudice and stereotypes and to intensify the dialogue between refugees and their host societies.

Showcase: MINA - Artistic Ports and Passages

As Syrian artists are spread in different corners of the world, separated from their local audiences, Ettijahat-Independent Culture held from 30 November till 3 December the showcase MINA - Artistic Ports and Passages in Beirut to celebrate their work. The event featured various artistic projects recently supported by the Laboratory of Art Program. The multidisciplinary art platform highlighted the works of film and theatre directors, visual artists, musicians, and writers living in Syria, Lebanon, Germany, and France and also discussed their life and creative experiences in Damascus and abroad.
