The exhibition is a collaboration between photographer Stefan Berg and curator Harald Theiss for the 100th anniversary of the Bauhaus.
Through a contemporary visual language detached from the commonly known culture-historical and architectural discourse, the model of “Bauhaus thinking” should become visible here. Berg’s goal is to present his ideas pictorially: to illustrate the modernization and composition of a society, but also to make it palpable. With a present-day and concentrated photographic gaze, Berg investigates whether and how the idea of the Bauhaus manifests itself in the exemplary Dessau building and how, as Gropius once said, art and technology can be regarded as a new single entity.
The exhibition is an obstacle course in which viewers encounter subjects like light, proportion, surface, space and materiality in constituent chapters. The chosen motifs emphasize these subjects through their compositional juxtaposition. They encourage viewers to confront the question, “What is the Bauhaus, actually?” and potentially discover something new.
Stefan Berg worked as a lecturer in photography at the Anhalt University of Applied Sciences in Dessau for one and a half years, at which time he completed the photographs.
He lives and works in Berlin as a freelance photographer and lecturer.
Photographic works by Stefan Berg have been shown in Germany, France and Belgium at places like the Goethe-Institut Lyon and the Goethe-Institut Strasbourg. A series was acquired for the collection of the German Embassy in Paris, another for that of the Goethe-Institut Brussels. His clients include, among others, the German Academic Scholarship Foundation, the Robert Bosch Foundation, the Internationale Bauausstellung (IBA) Fürst-Pückler- Land, the Federal Office for Building and Regional Planning (BBR), the Ministry of Science, Research and Culture of the Federal State of Brandenburg (MWFK) and the Hasso Plattner Institute Potsdam. He has taught at universities such as the University of Arts Berlin, the Anhalt University of Applied Sciences in Dessau and the University of Applied Sciences in Potsdam.
Harald Theiss is an independent art historian, curator and writer.
He studied at the Free University of Berlin. Since then, he has worked as a curatorial assistant for artists and curator for the Stiftung Mercator and Rudolf Augstein Stiftung, galleries, the Akademie der Künste, Kunstraum Potsdam, Kunstquartier Bethanien, Kunsthalle Kristiansand Norway, the Japanese-German Center Berlin, HAL and the project space alte feuerwache. He also takes care for art in public space and percent-for-art projects.
On behalf of [phase eins]. project management for architecture and urban design, the Senate Department for Culture and Europe, the BAM and the Ministry of Finances of the Federal State of Brandenburg he has advised, among others, the projects New Parliament Potsdam, Ministry of Education and Research, Humboldt University of Berlin and Berlin State Opera Unter den Linden.
