A colourful theatre play for children and young audiences
Contemporary German-language drama is characterized by enormous variety. Many playscripts written in German are known to audiences in Asia primarily through their English translations. It would of course be far preferable to present these plays to the public in Asian languages. Those reflections are what gave rise to our project: contemporary German-language drama in six South Asian languages – Bangla, Hindi, Marathi, Sinhalese, Tamil, and Urdu.
The Goethe-Institut Sri Lanka in collaboration with the Somalatha Subasinghe Play House, the Public Library Colombo, Internationales Theaterinstitut Berlin and Stücke Festival/Mülheim an der Ruhr presents the German theatre play
"The story of the lion who could not count" in Sinhala language at the Public Library Colombo (12.02.2022) and the Goethe-Institut (26.02.2022).

„Contemporary German-language drama in South Asian languages“ which is characterized by its enormous variety. It has long been and continues to be shaped by both a rich tradition and significant international influences.
Those reflections are what gave rise to our project:
contemporary German-language drama in six South Asian languages – Bangla, Hindi, Marathi, Sinhalese, Tamil, and Urdu. These translations are intended first and foremost to be used within India, but will also be available to other Goethe-Instituts in Dhaka (Bangla), Colombo (Tamil and Sinhalese) and Karachi (Urdu), and in principle to Goethe Centres and additional theatre companies throughout South Asia.
The
Sinhala version of the theatre play "The story of the lion who could not count" will be performed by the
Somalatha Subasinghe Play House which was founded by the late Mrs. Somalatha Subasinghe in 1981. Itis the only professional theatre company which produces mainly musical theatre for children and youth in Sri Lanka. LCYTF has produced a repertoire of theatre productions over the last 33 years and instrumental in training a significant number of talented young artists who have excelled in different fields in creative art in Sri Lanka.

Kaushalya Fernando: Kaushalya’s illustrious artistic career on stage, television and cinema is spanning since early 1980s. She is a theatre director and an actor trainer attached to Somalatha Subasinghe Play House. She has won many national and a few international award and commendation for acting on screen.

Chandana Aluthge: Chandana’s creative career commenced in 1981 when he joined Somalatha Subasinghe Play House. He is an artistic director, lighting designer and choreographer attached to Somalath Subasinghe Play House. By Profession he is a professor of Economics at the University of Colombo.

Nilanka Dahanayaka: Nilanka is an Actor, director and script writer trained primarily at Somalatha Subasainghe Play House. Nilanka has national and international level exposure on main stream theatre and theatre for children.
"The lion who could not count" Synopsis:
The beautiful lioness kisses another! The lion with the sharp teeth can roar so loudly, it does not help him: Who can not count to three, has quite bad cards. So the lion sets out to unravel the mystery of the numbers, and with a little calculation he finally regains the heart of the beautiful lioness ... Martin Baltscheit has succeeded in creating a brilliant sequel about the popular bigmouth.
