String Quartets of Popper, Nielsen, and Villa- Lobos

The Chamber Music Society of Colombo is delighted to announce two evenings of rare chamber music featuring the principal players of the society. The quartets of renowned composers David Popper, Carl Nielsen, and Heitor Villa-Lobos will be performed on the 23rd and 24th of September at 7 pm at the Goethe-Institut Hall.

The Villa-Lobos' String Quartet No. 1, originally composed in 1915 in Nova Friburgo, Brazil, under the title "Suíte de Quartetos de Corda: Suíte Graciosa," the quartet showcases Villa-Lobos' unique talent and musical acumen. Although the original manuscript, dated March 5, 1915, was privately performed at the home of the esteemed Brazilian composer Homero de Sá Barreto, it was never publicly showcased. In 1946, believing the original manuscript to be lost, Villa-Lobos passionately rewrote the piece to preserve its beauty, dedicating it to the Quarteto de Friburgo.

In addition to Villa-Lobos' early masterpiece, the program will feature the works of David Popper and Carl Nielsen. Popper, a celebrated cellist and composer, will be represented by his C minor quartet, influenced by Schumann and Wagner, while Nielsen's ‘Movements’ for string quartet will engage the audience with its rich Scandinavian folk-based melodies.

The concerts will take place at the Goethe-Institut Hall, a venue renowned for its exceptional acoustics and intimate atmosphere. Music lovers will have the opportunity to listen to the principal players of the Chamber Music Society of Colombo as they breathe life into these rare compositions. Lakshman Joseph-de Saram, Violin I. Sulara Nanayakkara, Violin II. Othman H Majid, Viola. Rochana Ramanayaka, Violoncello. The program will be moderated by Lakshman Joseph-de Saram, the Artistic Director of the CMSC.
