Impulse internationaler Medienexperten, eine moderierte Diskussion mit offener Fragerunde, sowie eine Theaterperformance als kreativer Einstieg in ein so prominentes Thema -
Internet und soziale Medien sind allgegenwärtig. Der Nutzer ist längst nicht mehr nur Empfänger, sondern auch Sender, kann Einfluss auf den Diskurs nehmen: Diese demokratische Errungenschaft ist wertvoll, ohne Frage, doch korrelieren damit auch Herausforderungen.
„Postfaktisch“ – in Deutschland 2016 zum Wort des Jahres gekürt – beschreibt das Phänomen, dass Emotionen und ‚gefühlte Wahrheiten‘ gesellschaftspolitische Diskurse zunehmend dominieren und der Wahrheitsgehalt der Meldungen dabei immer unwichtiger wird.
Bietet die Fake-News-Kultur mit all ihren Facetten den Nährboden für Angriffe auf demokratische Werte und gefährdet somit den Pluralismus der Medienlandschaft und Meinungen? Wenn alles zur ‚Wahrheit‘ wird, kann es dann überhaupt noch eine Wahrheit geben? Und wann sind News eigentlich „Fake News“? Geplante Misinformation-Kamapgnen, Shitstorms, Propaganda, Fake News… werden wir bald noch wissen, was wahr ist?
Trotz der Übersättigung und Überforderung durch die Nachrichtenmassen ist jedes Subjekt Teil der Öffentlichkeit. Als dieses wird es dem ansteigenden Druck ausgesetzt, sich fortwährend mit den Gefahren, Risiken und Potentialen neuer medialer Ströme auseinanderzusetzen - möchte es aktiver Teilnehmer dieser Öffentlichkeit bleiben.
Darüber wollen wir am 12. Oktober gemeinsam mit drei Medienexperten/innen im Goethe-Institut Riga sprechen. Eine Kurzperformance des Ģertrūdes ielas teātris auf Basis des Theaterstücks Like it, Fake it von Mikhail Kaluzhsky nimmt das Thema künstlerisch in den Blick.

Nika Aleksejeva (LV)
Als Leading Digital Forensic Researcher am DFRLab des Atlantic Council arbeitet sie zusammen mit dem NATO StratCom Center of Excellence an der Aufdeckung und Richtigstellung von Misinformation/Fake News im baltischen Raum und darüber hinaus. Sie verfügt über einen journalistischen Hintergrund und setzt ihr Wissen dazu ein, die Verbreitung von Misinformation über Social Media, Online Blogs und Foren einzudämmen und Menschen in diesem Bereich zu schulen.
Patrick Stegemann (DE)
Formatentwickler und Redakteur für multimediale Inhalte, studierte Kommunikationswissenschaften, Soziologie, Peace&Conflict Studies und modernes Hebräisch, Leiter des Undercover-Forschungsteams für die Doku "Lösch Dich! So organisiert ist der Hate im Netz / Doku über Hater und Trolle" des öffentlich-rechtlichen deutschen Fernsehens. Sie erregte vielfältiges Aufsehen und fokussiert das rechtsextreme Troll-Netzwerk Reconquista Germanica.
Jānis Polis (LV)
Eigentlich in der Marketingbranche arbeitend, wurde er eher zufällig zum Fake-News-Experten im Bereich lettischer Medien und Propaganda. Sich selbst ‚Pseudo‘-Experten nennend, deckt er auf seinem Blog gelegentlich erfolgreich Online-Propaganda auf, womit er sich nicht nur Freunde gemacht hat.

Impulses made by international media experts, a moderated discussion with an open question and answer session and a theater performance give a creative introduction to such a prominent topic -
Internet and social media are omnipresent. The user is no longer just a recipient, but also a sender. He can influence the discourse: this democratic achievement is valuable, without a question, but it immediately correlates with the following challenges.
The resulting sheer endless data flows and floods of messages into and through social networks overwhelm many recipients, making it more difficult to distinguish qualitatively questionable from high-quality information.
"Post-Factual" - chosen as the Word of the Year in Germany in 2016 - describes the phenomenon that emotions and "perceived truths" increasingly dominate socio-political discourses and that the validity of the reports becomes less and less important.
Does the fake news culture, with all its facets, provide fertile ground for attacks on democratic values, thus jeopardizing the pluralism of the media landscape and opinions? If everything becomes 'truth', can there be any truth at all? And when are news really "fake news"? Planned misinformation campaigns, shitstorms, propaganda, fake news ... will we soon still know what’s true?
Despite the oversaturation and overstrain of these news masses, every subject is part of the public. As a result, it is being subjected to the increasing pressure to continually deal with the dangers, risks and potentials of new media flows - if it wants to remain an active participant in this public sphere.
This is what we want to talk about at the Goethe-Institut on October 12th. A short performance by the Ģertrūdes ielas teātris based on the play Like it, Fake it by Mikhail Kaluzhsky takes the theme artistically into focus.
The thematic impulses of the speakers culminate in a discussion with the audience.

Nika Aleksejeva (LV)
As the Leading Digital Forensic Researcher at the Atlantic Council's DFRLab, she works with the NATO StratCom Center of Excellence to uncover and correct misinformation / fake news in the Baltic region and beyond. She has a journalistic background and uses her knowledge to curb the spread of misinformation via social media, online blogs and forums and train people in this area.
Patrick Stegemann (DE)
Format developer and editor for multimedia content, studied communication sciences, sociology, Peace & Conflict Studies and modern Hebrew, head of the undercover research team for the documentary "Lösch Dich! So organisiert ist der Hate im Netz / Doku über Hater und Trolle" of the public German television. The documentary got a lof of manifold attention and focused on the right-wing troll network Reconquista Germanica.
Jānis Polis (LV)
Actually working in the marketing industry, he became by chance a fake news expert in Latvian media and propaganda. Calling himself a pseudo-expert, he occasionally exposes online propaganda on his blog. Doing so, he not just made friends.
