Valley of Love

The Californian Death Valley is one of the hottest places on Earth. This provides the setting for a peculiar meeting between two people who could not be more different: Isabelle and Gérard, played by the world-famous French actors Isabelle Huppert and Gérard Depardieu.

The two of them used to be a couple and had a son together 25 years ago, Michael, who tragically committed suicide. Short after his death, they both receive a mysterious letter in which the dead son asks for one last meeting. Over the course of five days they are to show up together at different lookout points in the Death Valley, where their son will appear before them. Both parents agree to take part: she full of desperate hope, and he with skeptical, yet curious distance.

In the scorching loneliness of the Californian desert, under picture-perfect blue skies and before the backdrop of Hollywood’s most famous rocky sceneries, the meeting between the former couple escalates more and more into a psychological thriller. In Valley of Love, the director Nicloux manages to create a thoughtful, but easy-going film full of irony and subtle humor, telling a story about the dreariness of life, yet still leaving room for hope.
