„CAN / CANNOT“ is a typical proverb in Kuala Lumpur that can be understood with any linguistic background and is often used for fast communication. The title of the exhibition shows the characteristics of the metropolis with its diverse cultures and religions – the living side by side and at the same time apart from each other, the simultaneous stepping aside and overlapping, and creating something new and unique in the same moment.

The three months stay in a foreign country – getting to know and experiencing new cultures and languages – facilitated an artistic fieldwork. A journey of collecting sounds and architectural photographs and capturing of opposites in a city that is in the middle of a radical changing process. Especially fascinating was the dense and convoluted architectural landscapes – a juxtaposition of different styles, formations, corners, roofs and fronts with the most versatile arrangement of surfaces and colors; side by side of big construction areas, historic places, sacred sites, freeways and skyscrapers.

Details of this cityscape are photographically portrayed and are interwoven with movable paperworks and a sound collage by Goh Lee Kwang, creating a site-specific installation within the framework of the exhibition.

Workshop:  How to find an idea!? The development of artistic ideas for installations in a public space.
28 October 2018, 11am-5pm

The focus of this workshop will be the development of artistic ideas for installations in the public space. First of all, Maike Häusling will present a few examples of her site-specific installations. Afterwards, the participants will explore their immediate environment: what is striking to the eye, what is disturbing, what is pleasing, what could be changed by an artistic intervention?
The sites and places will be photographed and afterwards graphically reworked and complemented with ideas for installations.

The workshop is mainly addressing art students and young artists, but anyone interested in the subject is most welcome to participate.
The workshop is free of charge. Please register until 26 October at newsletter-programme-kl@goethe.de
