The convergence of broadcasting, telecommunications and information technology in the digital era has changed the way media is consumed. Streaming platforms, social media, and handphones are fast becoming our primary sources of information and entertainment. Filmmakers as content creators have no choice but to adapt and change the way they conceptualize, fund and distribute their films. Similarly, the governance and regulation of film content will also need to undergo some rethinking to find new ways to cope and adapt to the changes in our digital world.
Presently, independent and industry self-regulation has emerged as one of the favored models to govern content in this borderless and faceless era.
Is independent self-regulation of content the logical way forward for the film industry in the era of the Internet? What are the advantages, risks and best practices required?
