A family history from the last years of the GDR. Eventhough Surgeon Richard Hoffmann has long come to terms with the system opportunistically, his lifestyle makes him vulnerable to blackmail for state security. Despite some conflicts Richards son Christian faces, he graduates high school and experiences a hard and momentous time at the National People's Army. His uncle Meno occasionally half-heartedly fights as a lecturer against the state censorship. The fall of the Berlin Wall in November 1989 appears as salvation to the protagonists. The adaptation of Uwe Tellkamp's eponymous novel dispenses with the epic breadth of the original, but was one of the great events of German television in the year 2012.
