OBSCURA is Malaysia’s premier photography festival that celebrates photography from Asia and around the globe in its 7th edition. Each year, the festival hosts a series of exhibitions, talks, workshops, portfolio reviews and slide shows. The aim of the festival is rooted in education, understanding and togetherness through premier events that take place throughout the festival. This year the curatorial topic of OBSCURA 2019 will be subculture. The OBSCURA Festival is embedded within The George Town Festival, a major international festival of the arts and culture in South East Asia.

We are very pleased to announce, that two German photographers, Simon Menner and Hannes Wiedemann, will be contributing to the Obscura Festival of Photography 2019. Both photographers are going to exhibit their works, implement portfolio reviews and artist talks.

Simon Menner © Simon Menner Simon Menner is a Berlin-based photographer, who will be showing his Photography series on the Surveillance System of the German-Democratic Republic at the Obscura Festival of Photography called Images from the Secret Stasi Archives or: what does Big Brother see, while he is watching?. After the fall of the Berlin Wall 1989, it was finally possible for the public to get access to the archives of the German Democratic Republic’s Ministry for State Security (Stasi), one of the most effective surveillance apparatuses in the world. Simon Menner studied parts of the huge archive and selected some pictures with the aim to give the public the opportunity to look inside a world that operates in secret.
In 2007, Menner graduated with a MFA from the University of Arts, Berlin and since then participated in numerous solo- and group shows. His work has already been shown in places like C/O Berlin, Museum of Contemporary Photography Chicago and Museum of Photography Berlin, just to name a few. More information on Simon Menner and his show can be found here: Simon Menner
