The Language Department at the Goethe-Institut Namibia in 2018 launched the “Holiday Deutsch” programme that during the public school holidays in Namibia accommodates pre- and primary learners for a German language course.
Equivalent to 48 teaching units of one term and held over the span of about two weeks, the programme is designed for children to learn German through fun, stimulating and interactive lessons.
“Very often, parents don’t know what to do with their children during the long school holidays that come twice per year. Development in any language requires the application of concepts, otherwise school lessons would be pointless,” explain Goethe-Institut Namibia Head: Language Department, Julia Perestrelo. She said the successful programme that has been active for two years also includes educational excursions to museums and art galleries that are discussed with learners in the German language.
“It is important for a learner to experience the German language through such excursions and learn about the culture of Germany for them to develop a skill in the language,” said Perestrelo.
Holiday Deutsch is held during the April/May and August mid-term breaks. Each session of Holiday Deutsch is designed and customized to suit the age and level of learners. Application is open two weeks before the school holidays.
